"Now the birth of Jesus the Messiah took place in this way. When his mother Mary had been engaged to Joseph, but before they lived together, she was found to be with child from the Holy Spirit"
This is how this Sunday's gospel text begins and this kind of set my mind on Mom's as I ran errands today.  As I exited the local Post Office, I noticed a young woman sitting in a car waiting for someone.  She was parked next to my car.  As I walked by she took a long drag from a cigarette and then held the cigarette out the window.  I initially thought she was being considerate to the toddler strapped in the car seat directly behind her.  As I entered my car, I noticed that she was texting with her free hand.  It was then that I noticed the prominent baby bump.  She was smoking while pregnant and with a toddler in the car.  I still not sure how to process this except to send it out to the e-world and see what you all think.  There is a part of my that is so grateful that Mary was chosen to be Jesus and that the Holy Spirit chose well.

I had a visitor to my office who tried to convince me that it was a good idea for the youth of St. John to distribute these books produce by the Gideon's.  It was an interest conversation because I kept trying to educate him as to what a Lutheran was.  He kept emphasizing that the Word needed to get out into the world and this little book could do that.  I realized that we are both the church, but our purpose and goals are very different.  He wants to get the little book out there and I want to read the book.  I want to ask, "What do this mean" and he is not to worried about that.  During this season of Advent and Expectant Waiting, it is good to talk about what we expect: from ourselves, from our church and from our God.  I expect more from people than just being the delivery  system.
